STAMMERING

Learning to talk, like learning to walk,is never completely smooth and does not happen right away. Small children often stop,pause,start again and stumble over words when they are learning to talk.

Between the ages of two and five years,it is natural for a child to repeat words and phrases, and hesitate with 'um' s and 'er' s,when he is deciding what to say ,next.
Stammering is the inability of a person to speak typical, fluent manner. Every individual has a different fluency pattern.Also,not everyone is totally fluent all the times. 
Identification of 'stammering '
1. Is putting extra effort while mouthing words
2. Has tense and jerky speech
3.cannot seem to get started,no sound comes out for several seconds
4.In stretching sound in a word " I want a ssstory" also say " mu- mu- mu"

Some of the common causative factors may be:

1.Change in familiar home or school environment
2. Birth of a sibling
3. Absence of one or both parents temporarily or for some length of time
4. It is about four times more common in boys than in girls.
5. Stress situations
6. Faulty coordination
7. Slower rate of language development

STRATEGIES

1. Remain observant
2. Be supportive
3. Do not say " stop and start over " listen patiently and carefully to what the child is saying.
4. Say something encouraging
5. Spend time together
6. Healthy diet
7. Try to avoid a hectic and rushed lifestyle.
8. Watch physical language
